Affirmative action policies are used when decision makers want to change the characteristics of a selected population, for example by raising the share of females or minorities in the selected group. I will discuss the ways that affirmative action policies work in two settings -- admission to highly selective colleges, and selection of honors by professional associations -- and some of the consequences of these policies.
